In 1994–95 the Nelson-Atkins was hard-pressed for staff work spaces and asked M. Goodwin Associates, Inc. to review options for offsite offices. The mandate was to not expand beyond the existing building footprint. We reviewed five potential sites and surveyed the scope of renovations necessary to install the nearly 40 staff members in non-museum real estate. Our study pointed out the numerous administrative difficulties and high cost for such a temporary program. In 1998–99 the Trustees of the Nelson-Atkins chose to expand beyond the existing building footprint in a major expansion program. Steven Holl is the architect for this (unrelated) program. |
