This project for a site and museum master plan, space plan, and facilities evaluation provides a logical, functional and economically feasible growth plan for the museum through the year 2020. Since the museum opened in 1954, there have been eight separate and sometimes unrelated expansion programs that addressed individual departmental needs. This is the first comprehensive long-range plan to integrate all future needs. For this reason, major space-planning adjustments were required to provide a clear re-organization of departmental and functional uses. MGA worked with Randall Stout Architects to develop this concept. Among the client priorities that this planning concept achieves is the creation of separate and logical circulation paths for the public and service areas. The resulting plan minimizes cross traffic conflicts between pathways for visitors, art handling, and food services. The project proposed a long-term space increase from 59,000 net square feet to 133,000 net square feet, and includes a much-needed new public entry. Major departmental growth planned for new construction includes the Jane and Arthur Stieren Center for Exhibitions and a special events area, art handling area, dock, library, gift shop, and entry. Major renovation includes the permanent collection galleries, a new sloped-floor auditorium, and the integration of the education areas with the main building. The original historic 1924 McNay House is built in a Spanish Mediterranean style featuring portals, courtyards, and decorative tile work. MGA and RSA's space plan organized future growth around a second courtyard, by integrating portals and terraces to maximize views of sculpture gardens, fountains, courtyards, as well as the beautifully landscaped 23 acre site overall. New parking areas increase capacity significantly, and are located to enhance the visitor’s experience while moving through the expanded sculpture gardens to the museum. We worked with the client to develop a phased expansion plan that worked within the boundaries and timing of the museum’s fund-raising capabilities. Phase 3 of the master plan is now underway with the Viguier design under construction. Phase I was the construction of a central plant for chillers and boilers and the upgrading of gallery heating, venting, and air conditioning systems. Phase 2 demolished the unused San Antonio School of Art building. |
